Dr. Matthew McCabe Chosen as First Podiatric Medicine and Surgical Resident

July 27, 2015

Foot and ankle specialist Matthew McCabe, DPM, has been selected as the first resident for the CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital Podiatric Medicine and Surgical Residency Program. He begins work with the program in July.

Originally from Littleton, Colorado, Dr. McCabe received his undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from Utah State University and earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. McCabe is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, the American Podiatric Medical Student Association, the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons, the American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management, and the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. Dr. McCabe also has volunteer experience in community organizations and the Podiatry field, and has his private pilot license.

The residency is a three-year, surgically oriented program in which Dr. McCabe will focus on foot and ankle surgery and comprehensive podiatric medicine. As a podiatric resident, Dr. McCabe, will receive intense training in CHRISTUS St. Patrick’s operating rooms as well as at Imperial Calcasieu Surgical Center and West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. Dr. McCabe will also gain extensive direct patient-care experience in the areas of wound care, diabetic care, and podiatric research and will receive podiatric and orthopedic experience, including clinical and practice management in the hospital and office settings. Dr. McCabe will also rotate in various specialties at CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital including emergency medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, pediatrics and radiology. In addition, Dr. McCabe will complete rotations through LSU Health Science Center in New Orleans and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, which will give him advanced surgical and enhanced research experience in the field of podiatric medicine.

Because the residency is part of a Center for Orthopaedics (CFO) and the region’s largest musculoskeletal group, Dr. McCabe will have the opportunity to work closely with experienced orthopaedic surgeons and specialists, and he will also work within the group’s Sports Medicine Program, which provides services to McNeese State University and 14 area high schools.
